Lobe
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007003
An elongated, tongue-like extension of a larger atmospheric feature, such as a pressure system, air mass, or precipitation area. These features are visible on synoptic charts, satellite imagery, or radar displays as distinct protrusions from the main body of the system. A lobe of the polar vortex, for instance, can bring extremely cold arctic air to mid-latitudes, causing significant weather events.
