Matanuska wind

A strong, gusty, cold northeasterly wind that blows down the Matanuska Valley of south-central Alaska in winter, mainly around Palmer. It develops when cold high pressure over the interior, for instance in the Copper River basin, and a low in the Gulf of Alaska set up a steep pressure gradient that funnels air through the valley. Its direction is from the northeast, down the valley toward Palmer and the Knik Arm.
