Moisture adjustment
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007371
The scaling of storm rainfall to account for the difference between the moisture actually available and a reference or maximum amount, normally gauged by precipitable water from persisting dew points. Observed rainfall is multiplied by the ratio of the larger moisture value to the storm's own, either to maximize the storm where it fell or to move it to another basin. Hydrometeorologists use the procedure as a standard step in estimating probable maximum precipitation.
