Monte Carlo method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007408

A class of computational algorithms that rely on repeated random sampling to obtain numerical results, often used when it is difficult or impossible to use other mathematical methods. In atmospheric science, it is applied in ensemble forecasting, where multiple model runs with slightly varied initial conditions are used to generate a probability distribution of future weather states. The method is also used in radiative transfer models to simulate the path of photons through the atmosphere.
