Mountain-plains wind systems
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010629
Regional wind patterns that develop due to the differential heating and cooling between elevated mountain ranges and adjacent lower-lying plains. These systems are driven by pressure gradients created by temperature differences. They often exhibit a diurnal cycle, with winds blowing from the plains to the mountains during the day and reversing at night.
