Natural remanent magnetization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007479
The permanent magnetism of rocks and sediments acquired from the Earth's magnetic field at the time of their formation, abbreviated NRM. This magnetization is preserved unless the material is later heated above its Curie temperature or altered chemically. Paleoclimatologists analyze the NRM in sediment cores to reconstruct past changes in the Earth's magnetic field and to correlate sedimentary layers between different locations.
