Normal water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007599

A reference standard with a precisely known isotopic composition used to calibrate instruments and normalize measurements of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in water samples. The primary reference is Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW), which defines the zero point for the delta notation scale (δ¹⁸O and δ²H). These isotopic data are applied in paleoclimatology to infer past temperatures from ice cores and in hydrology to trace water sources.
