Normal stresses
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007598
Forces acting perpendicularly to a surface, either pushing (compression) or pulling (tension) on it. In fluid dynamics, including atmospheric and oceanic flows, these stresses are associated with pressure gradients and viscous forces that act to deform a fluid parcel. They are distinct from shear stresses, which act parallel to the surface.
