Packed tower

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007781

A type of wet scrubber used for air pollution control, consisting of a vertical column filled with packing material like plastic rings or saddles. Contaminated gas flows upward through the packing while a scrubbing liquid flows downward, allowing for intimate contact that transfers pollutants from the gas to the liquid. Packed towers are effective at removing gaseous pollutants and particulates from industrial exhaust streams before they are released into the atmosphere.
