Perturbation motion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007878
The component of fluid motion that deviates from a defined mean or basic state. This decomposition, known as Reynolds decomposition, separates the total flow into a steady or slowly varying part (the mean flow) and a fluctuating part representing turbulence or eddies. The product of perturbation velocities gives rise to Reynolds stresses, which represent the transfer of momentum by turbulence.
