Pivot arm anemometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010671

An instrument that measures wind speed based on the deflection of a pivoting arm or plate exposed to the wind. The force of the wind pushes against a flat plate or a similar object attached to a hinged arm, causing it to swing upwards or sideways against the force of gravity or a spring. The angle of deflection is proportional to the wind pressure, from which the wind speed can be derived and displayed on a calibrated scale.
