Pliocene climatic optimum

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007980

A period within the mid-Pliocene epoch, approximately 3.3 to 3.0 million years ago, characterized by global temperatures significantly warmer than present-day values. During this time, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were similar to current levels, and sea levels were considerably higher. This period serves as a past analog for understanding potential future climate scenarios under elevated CO2.
