Precipitation inversion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008114
A layer in the atmosphere where temperature increases with height, formed or maintained by the cooling effect of evaporating precipitation below the inversion. This stable layer can trap pollutants and often marks the boundary between different cloud types or air masses. It can also lead to freezing rain if temperatures above the inversion are warm enough for rain, but below it are freezing.
