Pulse modulation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008207

A method of encoding information onto a series of signal pulses by varying one of their properties, such as amplitude, duration, or position. This technique is used in weather radar systems to transmit electromagnetic energy and analyze the returned signals for information about precipitation. Common forms include pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM), pulse-duration modulation (PDM), and pulse-position modulation (PPM), each altering a different characteristic of the pulse train.
