Amplitude modulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010366
A technique for transmitting information by varying the amplitude of a carrier wave in proportion to the signal being sent, while the frequency remains constant. In atmospheric science, amplitude modulation (AM) has been used for data telemetry from remote sensors and radiosondes. Natural phenomena, such as lightning, also produce radio waves whose amplitudes fluctuate, which can be studied to understand storm dynamics.
