Frequency modulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005781
A method of encoding information onto a carrier wave by varying its instantaneous frequency in proportion to the amplitude of the input signal, while the carrier's amplitude remains constant. This technique is widely used in radio communications for its high fidelity and resistance to noise. Meteorological applications include the transmission of data from radiosondes and weather balloons back to ground-based receiving stations, as well as in some types of continuous-wave radar systems.
