Radiant energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010703
Energy that propagates through space or a material medium in the form of electromagnetic waves, such as light, heat, and radio waves. In atmospheric science, it is the fundamental driver of weather and climate, encompassing both incoming solar radiation (shortwave) and outgoing terrestrial radiation (longwave). The flow and transformation of radiant energy within the Earth-atmosphere system are quantified by the principles of radiative transfer and are measured in joules.
