A method of upper-air observation that determines wind speed and direction by tracking a free-rising balloon using radar or radio direction-finding equipment. The balloon carries a target or a radio transmitter, allowing its position to be continuously monitored as it ascends. This technique provides detailed wind profiles through the troposphere and lower stratosphere.
