Robin sphere
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008594
A rigid, metalized, inflatable balloon used to measure high-altitude wind speed and direction. Deployed from a sounding rocket, the sphere inflates at a designated altitude and is then tracked by ground-based radar as it descends through the atmosphere. Its observed trajectory and drift provide data on atmospheric winds at altitudes between 30 and 100 kilometers, a region difficult to probe with other direct methods.
