Falling sphere
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005535
A meteorological instrument consisting of a lightweight, inflatable sphere released into the upper atmosphere to measure wind speed and direction, as well as air density and temperature. As the sphere falls, its trajectory is tracked by radar, and atmospheric properties are derived from its descent rate and drift. This method is used to profile the atmosphere from about 30 to 100 kilometers altitude.
