Satellite sounding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008652
The technique of remotely sensing vertical profiles of atmospheric properties, such as temperature and humidity, using instruments aboard satellites. This is achieved by measuring the radiation emitted or absorbed by atmospheric gases at different wavelengths. Satellite soundings provide global coverage, filling data gaps over oceans and remote regions where conventional observations are sparse.
