A southeasterly wind of the Persian Gulf region, one of several spellings of the Arabic name sharqi, meaning eastern. It blows in spells mainly in spring and autumn, carrying dry, dusty air that can raise sandstorms and briefly close airports. Gusts of about 80 kilometers per hour occur, and a spell lasts from a day to several days.
