Slow manifold
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008945
A concept in dynamical systems theory describing a lower-dimensional space within the system's full phase space to which trajectories rapidly converge and then evolve slowly. It represents the balanced, slowly evolving states of a system, separating them from fast, transient wave-like motions. In atmospheric models, this corresponds to the quasi-geostrophic motions, which are distinct from faster gravity waves.
