spread-F
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009163
A phenomenon observed in ionograms where the F-region echo appears as a diffuse, broadened trace rather than a sharp, distinct line. This indicates the presence of small-scale irregularities in electron density within the F-layer of the ionosphere, which scatter radio waves. Spread-F is more common at night and in equatorial or high-latitude regions, affecting radio communication and GPS signals.
