Subtropical countercurrent
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009360
An eastward-flowing ocean current found within the subtropical gyres, typically located beneath the westward-flowing North Equatorial Current in the Pacific Ocean. This current is driven by a combination of wind stress curl and pressure gradients, acting as a return flow for the western boundary currents. It transports heat and salt across the ocean basin.
