Tide crack

A fracture that forms in fast ice or an ice shelf where it meets a grounded ice mass or the shoreline, caused by the vertical movement of the ice with the changing tides. These cracks are common features in polar regions and can be several meters wide. Tide cracks indicate the boundary between mobile and stationary ice.
