Tongara

A strong, squally southeasterly wind that blows through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This local wind is most frequent and intense during the winter months, from October to March. The tongara is a result of the regional pressure gradient and is funneled by the topography of the strait, creating hazardous conditions for shipping.
