Transponder
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010820
An electronic device that receives an interrogation signal and automatically transmits a response. In meteorology, transponders are often carried by radiosondes or aircraft to provide position and identification information to ground-based radar systems. Aircraft transponders, for example, respond to secondary surveillance radar interrogations by sending back a coded signal containing altitude and identification data.
