Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009864

The slope of a mountain or valley that faces away from the general path of the sun, resulting in significantly less direct solar radiation. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the north-facing slope, which remains cooler and moister than the opposing south-facing (adret) slope. Due to these conditions, snow cover persists longer on ubac slopes, and the treeline is found at a lower elevation compared to the adret slope.
