Unstable channel

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009899

A conceptual region or flow within the atmosphere characterized by dynamic conditions that cause small disturbances to amplify into larger-scale weather systems. Such instability can be baroclinic, driven by horizontal temperature gradients, or barotropic, resulting from shears in the horizontal wind field. The development of mid-latitude cyclones is a classic example of baroclinic instability occurring within the westerly wind channel.
