Zodiacal band

A faint, diffuse band of light extending along the ecliptic, visible in very dark skies away from city lights. It is caused by sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust particles orbiting the Sun in the plane of the solar system. This phenomenon is distinct from the zodiacal light, which is brighter and concentrated near the Sun.
