Gegenschein

A faint, diffuse brightening of the night sky in the antisolar direction, directly opposite the Sun. It is caused by the backscattering of sunlight by interplanetary dust particles concentrated in the ecliptic plane. The gegenschein is best observed from dark locations away from light pollution, appearing as an oval patch of light a few degrees across.
