White band

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010228

A bright, horizontal band observed in radar reflectivity data, typically located at the melting layer where ice particles transition to liquid water. This enhanced reflectivity occurs because melting snowflakes become coated with water, increasing their dielectric constant and thus their radar cross-section. It is a common feature in stratiform precipitation.
