Whistler
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010226
A very low frequency (VLF) radio wave that propagates through the Earth's magnetosphere along geomagnetic field lines. These waves are generated by lightning discharges and are characterized by a descending tone, or 'whistle,' as higher frequencies arrive before lower frequencies. Whistlers provide information about the electron density and magnetic field structure of the magnetosphere.
