Carbide lag test
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000541
A procedure to determine the circulation time, or lag time, for drilling fluid and cuttings to travel from the bottom of the well to the surface. A small amount of calcium carbide is pumped down the drill string, which reacts with the water-based mud at the bit to produce acetylene gas. The time is measured from the moment the carbide is pumped until the gas is detected at the surface gas trap, confirming pump efficiency and sample return times.
