Chenevert method

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000654

A practical test for water activity in which the relative humidity of the air sealed above a mud or shale sample is read with an electrohygrometer, since the humidity at equilibrium reflects the activity of the water in the sample. It was devised by Martin Chenevert to balance the salinity of an oil mud's water phase against the shale being drilled, so water does not move into or out of the shale. A mud whose water activity matches the shale's is called a balanced-activity mud.
