Chronostratigraphy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000671
The branch of stratigraphy that classifies rock bodies by the interval of geologic time in which they formed, rather than by lithology or fossil content. Its formal units are the eonothem, erathem, system, series and stage, and their lower boundaries are fixed at Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Points (GSSPs) in reference sections. Each time-rock unit has a time-only counterpart, such as era for erathem or period for system.
