Facies

The sum of all characteristics of a rock unit that reflect its origin and allow inference about the conditions under which it formed. These characteristics include lithology, sedimentary structures, fossil content, and color. Sedimentary facies are often mapped to understand depositional environments and predict reservoir quality.
