Cut and thread fishing technique

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000931

A fishing method for freeing a wireline tool string that has stuck downhole. The cable is clamped and cut at the rig floor, its free end is fed through a stand of drill pipe, and pipe is then run in stand by stand over the cable so that an overshot guided by the cable can latch onto the stuck tool or its cable head. It is slower and riskier than a side-door overshot but is regarded as the surest method.
