Cushion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000930
A column of fluid, such as water, brine, or diesel, placed in the drill string before running a drillstem test (DST). The cushion's hydrostatic pressure partially balances the formation pressure, which prevents formation damage and uncontrolled flow when the test tool is opened. The height and density of the fluid column are selected to achieve a specific underbalance against the expected reservoir pressure.
