Underbalance
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003977
A drilling condition where the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the drilling fluid column in the wellbore is intentionally maintained below the formation pore pressure. This allows formation fluids to flow into the wellbore during drilling, which can increase penetration rates and minimize formation damage. It requires specialized equipment and well control procedures.
