Diagenesis

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001050

The collective physical, chemical, and biological changes that occur in sedimentary rocks after deposition and before metamorphism. These processes include compaction, cementation, dissolution, and recrystallization, altering the original sediment into a lithified rock. Diagenesis influences reservoir quality by modifying porosity and permeability, which affects fluid flow and hydrocarbon accumulation.
