Metamorphism

The process by which rocks are transformed by heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids, resulting in changes to their mineralogy, texture, and structure. This occurs in the solid state, without melting. Metamorphism can be regional, affecting large areas during mountain building, or contact, occurring near igneous intrusions.
