Hydrothermal alteration
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001924
The process where hot, chemically active fluids circulate through rocks, causing changes in their mineralogy, texture, and chemical composition. These fluids, often derived from magmatic activity or deep circulation of groundwater, dissolve existing minerals and precipitate new ones, forming distinctive alteration zones. This process can create or modify reservoir porosity and permeability, affecting hydrocarbon accumulation.
