Skin effect

An alteration of the formation properties, particularly permeability, in the immediate vicinity of the wellbore, often caused by drilling fluid invasion or damage during completion. This altered zone can impede fluid flow into the well, affecting production rates. It is quantified by a dimensionless skin factor.
