Skin depth
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003437
The depth within a conductive medium at which the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave has attenuated to approximately 37% (1/e) of its surface value. It is inversely proportional to the square root of frequency, conductivity, and magnetic permeability. In electromagnetic geophysics, skin depth determines the maximum penetration of signals for subsurface imaging.
