Lithologic contact

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002191

A boundary surface separating two distinct rock units that differ in their physical characteristics, such as mineralogy, texture, or grain size. These contacts can be sharp or gradational, representing changes in depositional environment, diagenesis, or tectonic activity. Geologists map and interpret lithologic contacts to reconstruct the geological history of an area and identify potential traps for oil and gas.
