A boundary surface between two different rock bodies or between two distinct stratigraphic units. Contacts can be conformable, indicating continuous deposition, or unconformable, representing a break in the geological record. They can also be intrusive, where igneous rock invades pre-existing rock, or faulted, where rocks are juxtaposed by tectonic movement.
