Equalizing loop
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001315
A bypass line of pipe and valves installed around a primary, high-pressure valve, such as a gate valve on a Christmas tree. It allows pressure to be equalized across the main valve's closure mechanism before it is opened, reducing the torque required for operation and preventing damage to the valve seats and seals. The loop is opened first to slowly bleed pressure from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side until the differential pressure approaches zero.
