Epsilon (ε)
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001314
A Thomsen parameter that quantifies the anisotropy of P-wave velocity in the horizontal direction relative to the vertical direction in transversely isotropic media. It describes the difference between the P-wave velocity parallel to the layering and the P-wave velocity perpendicular to the layering. Epsilon is a dimensionless quantity, with values typically ranging from 0 for isotropic media to 0.4 or higher for strongly anisotropic shales.
